Here are some of my favorite photos and their stories!
These are some of my favorite photos! The World War II photos were taken by my Dad, Clayton E. White, Ship's Photographer for the USS Dade.
All others were taken by me on a very old, non-digital camera, the Pentax K1000. This means each picture had to be scanned and converted to a JPG file, but none were modified , cropped, or enhanced in any way.
All are c2004 Mary-lou Kirshon |

Battle Scene, South Pacific
This photo was taken from the deck of the USS Dade during an actual sea battle during World War II. My dad, Clayton E. White, Electrician's Mate First Class and Ship's Photographer, took this picture.

Dad Steering Amphibious Craft
Dad must have handed the camera to one of his shipmates for this photograph. He's the one on the right, steering the craft. |
Torey The Dog
Torey is my best buddy. Her mama was a Jack Russell Terrier and her daddy was a handsome stranger, probably a Border Collie. Anyway, I met Torey at the Animal Rescue League Shelter in Dedham, MA, and she has been my constant companion ever since. She'll be 12 in September (84 in dog years). |

Kauai Sunrise
This shot was taken on the Eastern Shore of Kauai, at Sunrise, on a December morning in 2003. I had to get up very early to get this shot! |

Dad on Kodiak Island
During the Korean War, there was concern that the USSR would attack the USA through the Aleutian Islands. Dad re-enlisted in the Navy and was sent to Kodiak Island, Alaska. This picture must have been taken during the summertime, as there is grass on the ground instead of solid ICE! |
Very Rare Hawaiian Monk Seal
This guy may be on the Endangered Species List, but he doesn't look too concerned as he takes his nap on the beach. The park department put a fence around him to keep the tourists away, but the beachgoers respected his privacy and kept thier distance. Poipu Beach, South Shore, Kauai, HI |

Landing Craft
This very dramatic shot of a landing craft was taken by my Dad. I think it was the Battle of Okinawa. |
Lumahai Beach,Kauai, HI
I took this picture from a helicopter. Lumahai Beach is the setting of the Movie "South Pacific". It was here that Mitzi Gaynor "Washed That Man Right Out Of Her Hair." There is a ferocious riptide on this beach. That's why there are no locals swimming there. I found this out the hard way. |

An aeriel photograph of the US Invasion of Okinawa. Clayton E. White, Photographer |
Bird of Paradise
This beautiful specimen was growing in the front yard of one of my students, Mallory. This was taken with an old Pentax K1000 camera with no filters or special lenses. Sometimes that's the best. |

This is my Dad's favorite picture! I made it into a water color painting for him which now hangs over his fireplace.
